AquaAction applauds the Canadian government’s Budget 2023 for its commitment to protecting Canada’s freshwater and marine ecosystems.

March 29th, Montréal- AquaAction applauds the Canadian government’s Budget 2023 for its commitment to protecting Canada’s freshwater and marine ecosystems. The recognition that the freshwater crisis needs a strong response to be resolved is very welcome. As a leader in water technology innovation, AquaAction recognizes the positive impact of the budget on water-related initiatives and is eager to support the government in its efforts.

The establishment of the Canada Water Agency and a strengthened Freshwater Action Plan, supported by a $650 million investment over ten years, starting in 2023-24, will allow for crucial monitoring, assessment, and restoration work in key watersheds across Canada, including the Great Lakes, Lake Winnipeg, Lake of the Woods, St. Lawrence River, Fraser River, Saint John River, Mackenzie River, and Lake Simcoe.

While there is always more work to do, this is an important and crucial step towards a greener and more sustainable future.

Soula Chronopoulos, President of AquaAction said: “The funding commitments to freshwater sustainability and clean energy in this new budget are unprecedented. Water is life. The freshwater crisis is not only a climate issue but also a health issue. This funding will help us accelerate next-gen innovations to address the crisis and make a significant economic and environmental impact. With 20% of the world’s freshwater located in Canada, we are finally taking a strong lead on innovative sustainable solutions for our planet, and humanity.”

Kariann Aarup, Vice President of Programming and Impact adds: “This is a good budget for water and for clean technology. AquaAction is at the intersection of both and looks forward to working with the Federal government and all jurisdictions across the country to ensure Canadian ingenuity is leveraged to achieve a future where all waters in Canada are in good health.”
