Water is essential to life, yet millions of people across North America rely on well water, often without knowing if it is safe to consume.
Matthew Mizzi, an environmental science graduate with a passion for venture capital, founded Drinkable, having combined his interests to tackle pressing environmental issues, with water safety at the forefront. Drinkable’s solution targets the 44 million well users in North America who depend on groundwater. Studies suggest that between 25% and 35% of private wells are unfit for continued consumption. Despite the importance of regular water testing, it is often neglected due to its complexity and inconvenience.
Drinkable has developed a groundbreaking technology: a reusable handheld device with a single-use sensor cartridge. This device allows users to test for well water contaminants such as arsenic, lead, and uranium in just 5 minutes. Paired with Drinkable’s mobile app, it enables users to save their results and provides guidance on understanding and addressing common health concerns related to water contaminants.
As Matt states, “I see Drinkable as a device, as a platform for continued progression.” Drinkable’s vision goes beyond water testing. Matt envisions the device as a platform for ongoing advancement, capable of testing for various contaminants and helping reduce health risks associated with waterborne illnesses. The potential impact on public health and the environment is significant, offering a preventive approach to water safety that can benefit millions.
Developing this technology was no small feat. Initially focused on water treatment for remote communities, Matt quickly realized that inadequate water testing was the primary bottleneck. The company is optimistic and continues to push forward, aiming to deliver their first units to customers in a little more than a year. While all the sensors are nearly ready, the focus remains on scaling up the company, fundraising and securing pre-orders.
Matt emphasized the importance of persistence throughout an entrepreneurial journey, as it is vital to push through challenges when others might give up. His ability to integrate critical thinking and first principles thinking has been instrumental in Drinkable’s progress.
Participating in the AquaHacking Challenge Atlantic Canada 2019 was a pivotal moment for Drinkable. Despite the onset of COVID-19, Matt and his team at the time collaboratively built their vision virtually.
The competition offered valuable exposure and validation, helping them refine their approach and connect with industry experts.
“I think the information and the problem selection committee are really important,” Matt explained. “AquaAction has identified that and put a lot of effort into making sure that there’s time spent there because it obviously had a huge impact on us.”
He underscored the value of his affiliation with AquaAction, noting that being integrated into such a well-respected ecosystem facilitates smoother conversations and enhances recognition within the industry.
Matt Mizzi’s journey with Drinkable reflects the relentless drive and innovation required to tackle deep-rooted environmental issues. With a robust technological solution and an unwavering vision, Drinkable is poised to revolutionize how well users ensure the safety of their water. Their mission is clear: to protect water, our most precious resource and ensure it is safe for all who depend on it.
