Why We Need a New Wave of Freshwater Innovators for the Great Lakes

Written by Guest Contributor | Jan 26, 2026 5:46:42 PM

Above the surface, communities across the Great Lakes are a lifeline for millions and a powerhouse for our economy. Yet bubbling below the surface, this vital freshwater ecosystem faces unprecedented challenges: pollution, invasive species, climate change, and aging infrastructure. As someone who dedicated his life to protecting and restoring the Great Lakes, this crisis is deeply personal.

Now more than ever, we need innovation in water technology to safeguard this resource for future generations.

Why Young Innovators Matter

From my time in lead roles at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, I have seen first-hand what young leaders can bring to the table in terms of fresh ideas and bold solutions to complex water issues. But innovation doesn’t happen in isolation. These bright minds need access to resources; mentorship from experts who understand the challenges, seed funding to turn prototypes into real-world solutions, and a supportive community that encourages collaboration and growth. Without these tools, even the best ideas risk staying on the drawing board.

By supporting young innovators, we’re building a pipeline of leaders who will safeguard our global freshwater ecosystems for generations to come.

The role of the AquaHacking Program

AquaAction’s award-winning program gives young innovators the chance to develop real-world solutions for freshwater challenges. Through AquaHacking, participants receive:

  • Mentorship from industry experts
  • Seed funding to kickstart their projects
  • A supportive community of like-minded innovators

And thanks to the program’s partners, it’s free to join!

Since its launch in 2015, AquaHacking has become a catalyst for freshwater innovation. Over the years, the program has empowered thousands of young innovators to tackle some of the most pressing water challenges; everything from industrial water efficiency and smart municipal infrastructure to pollution reduction and invasive species management.

What makes AquaHacking unique is its real-world impact. Past participants have gone on to launch startups, develop scalable technologies, and partner with municipalities and industries to implement solutions that make a measurable difference.

This isn’t just an academic exercise. It’s a launchpad for actionable change.

Why This Year Is Different

The upcoming Challenge is the most ambitious AquaHacking yet. For the first time, it’s being co-hosted by two major binational organizations:

This partnership amplifies the program’s impact, ensuring that participants have access to unprecedented support, visibility, and collaboration opportunities across the Great Lakes region.
